Alan F. Levin graduated with honors from Old Dominion University (originally William & Mary College) at Norfolk with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree with honors from the University of Houston Law Center in January 1969. While in law school, he served as Associate Editor of the Houston Law Review (published). He received the Garwood Award for academic excellence and the Outstanding Service Award. Additionally, he was selected for and served as Chair of the Student Appeals Board, Chief Justice of the Student Court and Chief Student Defender. He was also awarded membership in “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.”
Mr. Levin began his career in the Houston City Attorney’s office ultimately rising to Senior Assistant City Attorney. He handled hundreds of administrative, trial and appellate matters plus responding to the legal needs of the Mayor and City Council. His representation included the Jose Campos Torres and Randall Webster cases in addition to representing the City in Austin during Texas Legislative sessions. He resigned from the City in May of 1978 to enter private practice primarily in commercial litigation. His clients included the Resolution Trust Corporation, multiple banks (Federal and State), savings and loans together with an assortment of corporate and individual clients including environmental, regulatory and personal injury matters.
In September 1987, in response to the Legislature’s adoption of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Act, Mr. Levin made the decision to reframe the focus of his practice exclusively to ADR. He became one of the earliest certified mediators in Texas. It was a life-changing redirection.
Mr. Levin has been widely recognized by his peers, both locally and nationally, as one of the leading practitioners in the ADR field. He has thus far handled approximately 10,600 mediations involving a multiplicity of topics and challenges including, inter alia, medical malpractice, serious personal injury, dram shop, rape and employment. Importantly, his practice has allowed him to work with almost 14,000 attorneys over the years. He has achieved an impressive success rate, but, most of all, he enjoys working with the attorneys and their clients to successful conclusions. Recently he was awarded “Alumnus of the Year (2024-2025)” by the University of Houston Law Center. He feels blessed to have “found” ADR in 1987 and continues to enjoy practicing in a field which biblically proclaims: “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be blessed!”
In his free time, Alan enjoys spending time with his wife, Diane, three kids, Judd*, Jonathan and Lindsay and nine grandchildren, Madison, Tyler, Aurora, Luke, Goldie, Miriam, Ester, Dovid and Rachal. He is also an avid golfer.
